Why Pet Medical Emergencies Always Occur during Holidays, Weekends and Evenings!

Who gets prepared for a medical emergency when it comes to your Pet? Pets can tell you they feel sick or have a headache... Even when we can half-way come to the conclusion that our pet is not doing so well, we have to admit being clueless about what to do?
My dog, a Lab named Macy, has a horrible habit of eating sticks/wood. We noticed this first, when our wood pile in the back yard started dwindling away... But we thought, no way can a dog eat that much wood! After watching her outside, it became obvious that for some reason, our dog has a palate for eating wood, not just a little bit but ALOT of it! It worries me because I do not know how this can impact her. I think rationally, that this cannot be good for a dog? Of course, I won't know unless she starts showing signs that something is not quite right...
I have owned pets all my life. We've owned cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, fish, guinea pigs, birds, must we go on?? Of all the animals I have had as pets, I have not had one time where one of my pets picked vet office hours to get sick or show us a sign that something concerning was going on and we'd better go get it checked out now!
In talking to others, I have found we share the same experiences. A co-worker just told me about her horse breaking it's leg on Sunday night while leaving a trailer. I don't know about you, but we do not have a handy 24 hour Vet urgent care center anywhere near us! This leaves us to drive almost 1 hour to some vet center that charges astronomical costs and somehow sticks me with a $1000 bill.
We love them, as we leave the Vet and drive back home during the weekend, our Dog happily wags her tail, excited for the road trip!  Geeesh... can't they ever need care during office hours?
